Isn’t Nature Amazing?
See – Think – Wonder
- What do you see?
- What do you think is going on?
- What does it make you wonder?
This awesome creature (yes, this really is a living thing, not a piece of candy or glass) is a Jewel Caterpillar (Acraga coa) spotted by naturalist and photographer Gerardo Aizpuru near Cancun, Mexico. No word if it tastes like a gummi worm, but we’ll let you take the first bite. Here’s Gerardo’s own description:
“Photo take in a mangrove area , found this Stoning translucent caterpillar lay on a Red Mangrove tree leaf this morning early. Just can believe there is some species like this around the world. looks like made of glass whit small red mushroom inside every pic. about 3 cm long.”
The bottom image, as you might’ve surmised, shows the bright and impressively furry moth that this wicked little caterpillar eventually becomes. Transforming from one sort of awesome creature into another different, but still entirely awesome, creature? We’re seriously impressed.

.I see a unsual caterpillar, turning into a phenomenal moth.
I would also just like to ask something; are they still in the same habitat?
Good point Anneliese. I’m thinking they would still live in the same habitat. Maybe you could investigate the actual type of moth and find out what habitat the caterpillar prefers to be in. If you find out I’d love to read about it on the blog. Thanks for your question, I wonder who else will investigate and find out some answers for you.
Well Anneliese I was thing where dose the caterpillar and the butterfly live or where there habitat is? I wonder what the caterpillar is made out of?
I see a caterpillar covered in what I tihnk looks like diamonds. The skin is magnificent and the moth is a lot more furry than what they usually are.
Mrs Joyce please don’t accept that one that I posted just then i didn’t re-read it.
I see an unsual caterpillar that is a clear colour with orange dots. It is a spiky sort of shape that to me looks kind of smooth and squishy.
I think the caterpilla might be looking for food because most caterpillas and other insects usally eat leaves if they live on or near plants. The orange moth is what the caterpilla would turn into once they get older and continues through its life cycle.
This makes me wonder if these amazing creatures are still alive, where you would find them in the world, and if bthey are harmfull to us humans.

Sorry for the spelling should have read it first!!!

A fantastic caterpiler because it looks like a crital then it turns into a nice cosey butterfly. Nature is so butiful like that butterfly like I never knew nature could be SO AMZING!
I’m thinking the camerpill might be looking for food because most camerpill and other insect
some of the eat leaves.
These make me wonder if they still alive.
Thank you Mrs Joyce, I think I will investigate more, and go more into detail about this. New seed in my Writers Notebook, here I come! 🙂
It would be cool if I saw one.
